Marmoleum Magic in Sydenham: From Kitchen Elegance to Playful Modular Designs
There’s something deeply satisfying about a flooring project that evolves organically from one beautiful installation into something even more ambitious. That’s exactly what happened with our recent Forbo Marmoleum project in Sydenham, SE6 – a job that started with a straightforward sheet installation and grew into a complex modular masterpiece that really showcased what skilled craftsmanship can achieve.
The Kitchen Diner Foundation
The initial brief was to install Forbo Marmoleum Cocoa 2.5mm sheet in the client’s kitchen diner area. Now, Marmoleum Cocoa is a stunning choice for a family kitchen – those warm, earthy brown tones create an inviting atmosphere whilst being incredibly practical for the realities of daily family life. But before we could lay a single sheet, we had some serious groundwork to tackle.
The existing wooden subfloor needed proper preparation. Wooden subfloors present their own unique challenges with Marmoleum installation – any movement, unevenness, or imperfections will telegraph straight through to the finished surface. We can’t just lay sheet material over questionable boards and hope for the best. This is where proper preparation separates a job that lasts decades from one that fails within months.
We plyboarded the entire area, creating a stable, uniform surface that would support the Marmoleum perfectly. Then came the screeding process – smoothing and levelling everything to create that flawless base that quality installations demand. It’s time-consuming work that clients never see once the floor is laid, but it’s absolutely fundamental to achieving a professional result.
The Marmoleum Cocoa sheet installation itself went beautifully. The warm, natural tones looked absolutely stunning in the space, and judging by the photos the client shared with us afterwards, that kitchen diner has already become the heart of family life – exactly as it should be. There’s something wonderful about seeing a floor getting proper use, children playing, family meals being prepared, life being lived. That’s what good flooring is for.
When the Client Wants More
The client was so delighted with the kitchen diner that they came back with an exciting new challenge: could we extend the Marmoleum into the play areas and hallway, but this time using modular tiles in a 45-degree design? Absolutely we could – though we knew this would be considerably more complex than the sheet installation.
For this phase, we worked with Forbo Marmoleum Modular T3745 Cornish Grey in 50cm x 25cm tiles, combined with Forbo Marmoleum Modular 50317. The two-tone colour scheme would create visual interest, whilst the 45-degree diagonal layout would add real design sophistication to spaces that are often treated as purely functional areas.
The Technical Challenge
Here’s the thing about 45-degree modular tile installations: they’re absolutely beautiful when done right, but they’re technically demanding. Every single tile needs to be precisely cut and positioned. The diagonal lines need to be perfectly straight and consistent throughout the entire space. One tile slightly out of alignment, and the whole pattern can look off. It’s meticulous, exacting work that requires both skill and patience.
The same wooden subfloor ran throughout these areas, which meant the same careful preparation process – more plyboarding, more screeding, ensuring everything was absolutely level and stable. Then came the layout work: marking centre lines, calculating angles, planning the tile placement to minimize waste whilst ensuring the pattern flowed beautifully through the play areas and down the hallway.
The cutting alone was substantial. With a 45-degree layout, you’re creating a lot of triangular edge pieces, each one needing to be measured and cut precisely. Then there’s the lining up – making sure that grey and the second colour created the intended pattern, that grout lines aligned perfectly, that transitions between rooms were seamless.
This is exactly the kind of complex, interesting work we love at Cavendish deVere. Yes, it’s challenging. Yes, it’s time-consuming. But the end result – those perfectly aligned diagonal tiles creating striking patterns through family living spaces – makes every careful cut and precise placement worthwhile.
Working with a Legend
For this project, we had the pleasure of working with David Flack, one of our most trusted fitters and something of a legend in the flooring industry. David’s expertise and meticulous attention to detail made him the perfect choice for this technically demanding installation. He’d literally just returned from a project in Australia when he took on this Sydenham job – that’s the kind of international demand his skills command!
What makes David exceptional isn’t just his technical ability, though that’s certainly world-class. It’s his problem-solving approach and his dedication to getting every detail absolutely right. The kind of precision required for 45-degree modular installations is exactly where his expertise shines. Every cut perfect, every line true, every transition seamless.
Sadly, his photography skills and ability to use technology are not in the same league as his flooring skills, hence the lame images he has provided us of this exciting project!
Looking Ahead to Dubai
The exciting news is that David will be heading to Dubai soon, and we’ll be working with him there too as Cavendish deVere expands internationally. We’re opening in Dubai next year, bringing our commitment to quality installations to new markets. It’s thrilling to be growing whilst maintaining the same exacting standards and working with the same trusted craftspeople who’ve built our reputation here in London.
The Marmoleum Advantage
This project beautifully demonstrates why Marmoleum remains such a popular choice for family homes. It’s naturally antibacterial, incredibly durable, comfortable underfoot, and available in such a versatile range of colors and formats. The Cocoa sheet in the kitchen diner provides warmth and practicality, whilst the modular tiles in the play areas and hallway add design flair whilst being equally hardwearing.
For families with young children, Marmoleum ticks every box: easy to clean, hypoallergenic, sustainable, and tough enough to handle years of active family life. This Sydenham installation will still be looking beautiful decades from now, providing the foundation for countless family memories.
Projects like this – starting with one room and growing into something more ambitious – remind us why we love what we do. When clients trust us enough to expand the initial brief, when we get to showcase both straightforward installations and complex decorative layouts, when we work with craftspeople like David who bring such expertise and care to every detail – that’s when flooring becomes more than just covering a floor. It becomes lasting quality that enhances how people live in their homes.
