Our most challenging department store installation: giant rugs whipped on site – at night!
Some jobs you never forget. Not because they were easy, but because everything that could go wrong did go wrong – and yet somehow, you still pulled off what felt like the impossible. This was one of those nights.
We received the call from one of London’s most prestigious department stores. They were launching a high-end French luxury concession, and they needed bespoke carpet runners installed before the grand opening. The brief seemed straightforward enough: whip the edges of several large rugs on site. Giant rugs whipped on site in Central London at night. Simple, right? Well, as we’d soon discover, nothing about this job would be simple.
The Scale of the Challenge
The rugs themselves were monsters – 4 metres by 5.75 metres each, crafted from heavy loop pile carpet that spoke of quality and luxury befitting the brand. These weren’t the kind of carpets you could casually toss over your shoulder. Moving them required serious muscle and coordination. We assembled a team of three of our most experienced fitters, knowing we’d be working through the night to meet the 9am deadline when the furniture installation team would arrive. The concession had to be ready for opening day – there was absolutely no margin for error.
We loaded up the van with our industrial whipping machine, a comprehensive selection of yarns in various shades, seaming tape (just in case), our emergency lighting kit, and every tool we thought we might conceivably need. As it turned out, bringing everything including the kitchen sink would prove to be our salvation.
The Night Shift Begins
We arrived at the famous store after closing time, meeting the four-person site team who would be working alongside us. There’s something surreal about being inside an iconic London department store when it’s empty and silent, the only sounds being our footsteps echoing through the darkened sales floors. We made our way to the concession space and got to work immediately – time was already tight.
The whipping process began smoothly enough. Our machine hummed along, creating perfectly finished edges that would frame these magnificent carpets. Then, about two hours in, the bombshell dropped: “Oh, by the way, these rugs need to be joined together.”
Joining loop pile carpet is notoriously difficult. It’s one of those tasks that experienced carpet fitters will try to avoid if at all possible because the loops make creating an invisible seam incredibly challenging. And here we were, being told at midnight that we needed to achieve the near-impossible, with the clock ticking mercilessly toward our 9am deadline.
When Murphy’s Law Strikes
Just as we were processing this new requirement and formulating our strategy, the lights went out. Not flickered – went completely dark. The store’s lighting system was on an automatic timer, and nobody – not our site team, not security, not facilities management – could locate the override. We were working in one of London’s premier retail spaces, in pitch darkness, with giant heavy carpets, industrial machinery, and an immovable deadline.
Thank goodness for our emergency lights. We’d brought them as a precaution, never actually expecting to need them. We set them up around the work area, creating pools of light that let us continue working. It wasn’t ideal, but we’d come too far to give up now.
The joining work was painstaking. Loop pile doesn’t forgive mistakes, and we needed the seam to be invisible – this was a luxury French brand, after all. Our fitter worked with surgical precision, carefully aligning each loop, using our seaming tape and the grey-purple yarn we’d fortuitously packed. Hours ticked by. At several points, we honestly weren’t sure we’d make it.
The Home Stretch
Around 7am, exhausted but determined, we completed the final seam. We stood back, inspecting our work under our emergency lights. The joins were invisible. The whipped edges were perfect. The carpets lay flat and true, ready to showcase the luxury goods that would soon fill the space.
By 8:45am, we were packing up our equipment. The furniture team arrived right on schedule at 9am, and the client’s management team came to inspect the installation. The look on their faces said it all – they were absolutely delighted, even amazed that we’d pulled it off under such challenging circumstances.
Reflections on Excellence
This job exemplified everything we strive for at Cavendish deVere. Yes, we have the technical skills and the right equipment. But more than that, we come prepared for the unexpected. We bring solutions before we know what the problems will be. We work collaboratively with site teams and clients. And we never, ever give up.
The client was wonderful throughout – supportive, understanding when challenges arose, and genuinely appreciative of our efforts. The site team worked brilliantly alongside us, and everyone pulled together to make it happen. That’s when you know you’re doing something special – when despite the impossible circumstances, the team chemistry just works.
As we drove home that morning, exhausted but elated, watching London wake up for another day, we knew we’d just completed something remarkable. Not every job involves whipping machines by emergency light in the middle of the night, last-minute seaming impossibilities, and racing against dawn. But when they do, it’s these challenging installations that remind us why we love what we do.
This is the kind of project that builds reputations and creates lasting relationships with clients. When the pressure is on and everything’s against you, that’s when true quality and professionalism shine through. And shine through we did it’s just a shame the pictures don’t do it justice!
