Cutting a carpet to make a rug and whipping the edges

Now that we have the new whipping and binding machines we are getting a lot of enquiries about making rugs. Many times for off-cuts of carpets that just need cutting down to size and then the edges whipping to stop them fraying and other times where they want a bespoke size rug made with a cotton border attached that goes all the way around.

And then there are enquiries from people who have a rug they like, have moved house and it won’t fit so they want it altered to fi the new property.

In fact this wasn’t one of those. This was a project where the rugs were bought recently and they didn’t fit. We never really got to the bottom of how this happened, whether the client made a mistake or the supplier but we know they were expensive so I imagine some cross words were exchanged at some point and thus these rugs now have a history and a story.

Anyway, they wanted them cut to make effectively a hall runner rug. Not a tough project but the rugs did have an unusual pattern that they wanted to get right and there was no room for error with the amount that these items cost.

Luckily for us Hughie is very skilled and confident and so we cut and whipped these exactly to the clients specifications and then we took them over to the property to fit them. They fit very well although I would say they are an acquired taste design wise – but then I am not really qualified to comment on those ultra high-end products, so what do I know!

Our sister company Fenston Carter sells all kinds of runners and rugs and all over the World – mostly outside the UK they land in the USA. If you want something bespoke but without perhaps the price tag of the rugs in these images check out their ranges. They have a very fetching range of middle eastern styles sisal runners.
