Stunning Faux Sisal Stair Runner Installation on Bold Red Stairs in South Norwood

Every so often, a project comes along that truly makes us smile. This recent installation in South Norwood, SE25, was one of those jobs—a perfect marriage of bold colour choices and classic flooring craftsmanship that resulted in something quite spectacular. The client had already made a striking design statement by painting their entire staircase in a gorgeous, rich red, and they came to us wanting a stair runner that would complement this daring backdrop without overwhelming it.

The solution? A magnificent faux sisal stair runner with striped border from the Fenton Carter collection. The Bibury Court design features a beautiful natural-toned faux sisal weave, finished with an elegant black and cream striped border tape that frames each step perfectly. Against those vivid red stairs, the effect is nothing short of show-stopping.

Why Faux Sisal Works Beautifully on Stairs

Natural sisal has long been a favourite for homeowners seeking that timeless, textured aesthetic. However, genuine sisal can present challenges on staircases—it’s prone to staining, can feel rough underfoot, and doesn’t always wear evenly in high-traffic areas. Faux sisal offers the best of both worlds: all the visual appeal of natural fibres with significantly improved durability and a softer feel.

For this South Norwood project, the faux sisal was the ideal choice. It provides that sought-after woven look whilst being far more practical for a busy household. The neutral golden tones of the runner create a wonderful contrast against the painted red timber, allowing both elements to shine without competing for attention.

The Installation Process: Precision from Start to Finish

Installing a stair runner might look straightforward, but achieving a truly professional finish—particularly on a staircase with winder steps—requires meticulous preparation and expert craftsmanship. This particular staircase featured three winder steps at the turn, plus eleven straight treads, each requiring individual attention.

Templating: The Foundation of a Perfect Fit

Our process began with a site visit to create precise templates for every single step. Winder stairs present a unique challenge because each one is a different shape, narrowing towards the newel post and widening towards the wall. There’s absolutely no room for guesswork here. We carefully templated all three winders and the eleven straight stairs, ensuring we captured every dimension accurately.

These templates were then taken back to our warehouse, where the real magic happens. Working with made to order stair runners means we can achieve a level of customisation that simply isn’t possible with off-the-shelf products. Each piece of carpet was cut precisely to match its corresponding template, guaranteeing a perfect fit for every step.

Applying the Border Tape

One of the defining features of this installation is the striking striped border tape that runs along both edges of the runner. This border isn’t merely decorative—it also serves to bind and protect the cut edges of the carpet, ensuring longevity and a neat finish. The tape was carefully applied to each templated section at our workshop, allowing the adhesive to bond properly before fitting.

The black and cream stripes of the border add a sophisticated touch that elevates the entire design. It’s worth noting that these runners can be made with virtually any border style—so if you’re dreaming of a particular colour combination or pattern, the possibilities are extensive.

Preparing the Stairs

With our prepared runner sections ready, we returned to the property to begin installation. The first task was fitting gripper rods to all fourteen steps—the three winders and eleven straight treads. These small but crucial components are what hold the carpet securely in place, preventing any movement or slippage underfoot.

Next came the underlay. We cut and fitted Powerstep underlay to the subfloor of each step. This premium underlay serves multiple purposes: it provides cushioning for comfort, adds an extra layer of sound insulation, and creates a smooth, even surface for the carpet to sit upon. Powerstep is particularly well-suited to stair runners as it offers excellent support without adding excessive bulk.

The Final Fit

With the groundwork complete, we proceeded to fit the carpet sections. Each piece was carefully positioned, cut to its final shape where needed, and adhered securely to the Powerstep underlay. The winder steps demanded particular attention—ensuring the border tape followed the correct line around each curved edge whilst maintaining consistent spacing from the painted timber required patience and precision.

The result speaks for itself. Looking at the finished staircase, you can see how beautifully the runner flows from top to bottom, with the striped border creating clean, defined edges that frame the natural tones of the faux sisal against that bold red backdrop.

A Bespoke Service for Every Staircase

What we love about projects like this is the collaborative nature of the work. The client had a clear vision—they wanted something that would complement their beautifully painted red staircase whilst adding warmth and practicality. By working with quality materials and taking the time to template and prepare each component properly, we were able to deliver exactly that.

It’s worth mentioning that this same approach can be applied to any staircase, with any border combination. Whether you prefer a subtle tonal match or a bold contrast like this South Norwood project, we can create a bespoke stair runner tailored to your space and your style.

As always, once the installation was complete, we cleaned and cleared the area thoroughly, leaving our client to enjoy their stunning new staircase. Projects like this remind us why we love what we do—there’s nothing quite like transforming a space with quality craftsmanship and seeing the finished result.
