This recent installation in South Norwood, SE25, was one of those jobs—a perfect marriage of bold colour choices and classic flooring craftsmanship that resulted in something quite spectacular. The client had already made a striking design statement by painting their entire staircase in a gorgeous, rich red, and they came to us wanting a stair runner that would complement this daring backdrop without overwhelming it.

The solution? A magnificent faux sisal stair runner with striped border from the Fenton Carter collection. The Installation Process: Precision from Start to Finish

Templating: The Foundation of a Perfect Fit

Our process began with a site visit to create precise templates for every single step. Winder stairs present a unique challenge because each one is a different shape, narrowing towards the newel post and widening towards the wall. There’s absolutely no room for guesswork here. We carefully templated all three winders and the eleven straight stairs, ensuring we captured every dimension accurately.

These templates were then taken back to our warehouse, where the real magic happens. Working with made to order stair runners means we can achieve a level of customisation that simply isn’t possible with off-the-shelf products. Each piece of carpet was cut precisely to match its corresponding template, guaranteeing a perfect fit for every step.

Applying the Border Tape

Powerstep is particularly well-suited to stair runners as it offers excellent support without adding excessive bulk.

The Final Fit

With the groundwork complete, we proceeded to fit the carpet sections. Each piece was carefully positioned, cut to its final shape where needed, and adhered securely to the Powerstep underlay. The winder steps demanded particular attention—ensuring the border tape followed the correct line around each curved edge whilst maintaining consistent spacing from the painted timber required patience and precision.
