A Breath of Fresh Air in Brockley: Installing Forbo Marmoleum Fresco in SE4
There is a unique satisfaction that comes with working in the leafy, creative pockets of Brockley. Between the Victorian terraces and the vibrant local arts scene, there is a clear appreciation for design that lasts. We recently had the pleasure of transforming two bathrooms in a lovely SE4 home, and the choice of material was as elegant as the neighborhood itself: Forbo Marmoleum Fresco Marbled 3861 Arabian Pearl.
This project wasn’t just another day on the job; it was a genuine joy. From the warm welcome we received from the client to the stunning final aesthetic, this installation reminded us why we love the craft of flooring.
Phase 1: Out with the Old, Ready for the New
Every great floor starts with what lies beneath. The first step of our Brockley project involved the systematic removal of the existing flooring. We believe in leaving no trace of the past, so we ensured all old materials were cleared and disposed of responsibly.
Once the subfloor was exposed, the real precision work began. In wet environments like bathrooms, preparation is everything. We applied a high-quality primer across both bathroom subfloors to ensure perfect adhesion for the layers to follow.
Phase 2: Building the Foundation
Marmoleum is a natural product, and because it is relatively thin and flexible, it is unforgiving of lumps or bumps in the subfloor. To achieve that “glass-like” finish, we followed a rigorous smoothing process:
-
Screeding: We applied a professional-grade screed to both bathrooms, allowing a full 24 to 48 hours for the moisture to evaporate and the compound to settle perfectly.
-
Feather Finishing: Once the screed was dry, we applied a feather finish to fill any microscopic pores.
-
Sanding: We hand-sanded the surfaces until they were flawlessly flat and smooth to the touch.
The Star of the Show: Arabian Pearl
The choice of Marmoleum Fresco 3861 Arabian Pearl was an inspired one. This specific colorway offers a subtle, marbled aesthetic that mimics the soft glow of a natural pearl. It’s a sophisticated neutral that brings a sense of airy calm to a bathroom—perfect for those busy South East London mornings.
Phase 3: The Art of the Fit
Fitting Marmoleum is a specialized skill. Unlike click-vinyl, Marmoleum requires expert templating and adhesive work.
-
Templating: We meticulously templated the bathroom layouts, navigating around vanity units, toilets, and tricky corners to ensure a seamless look.
-
Cutting & Adhesion: Using specialized tools, we cut the Arabian Pearl sheets to size and secured them using a high-tack professional adhesive.
-
The Finish: We rolled the floor to remove any air bubbles and ensure a permanent bond with the subfloor.
Why Marmoleum is a Brockley Favorite
Beyond its beauty, Marmoleum is one of the most sustainable flooring choices on the market. Made from 97% natural raw materials (like linseed oil, wood flour, and jute), it is CO2 neutral and incredibly durable. For a homeowner in SE4 looking for “eco-friendly” options without sacrificing style, it is the gold standard. It’s naturally bacteriostatic, making it the hygienic choice for bathrooms, and it feels much warmer underfoot than stone or ceramic tile.
A Rewarding Result
We can’t emphasize enough how much we enjoyed this specific project. It’s rare to find a client so welcoming and appreciative of the technical steps involved in subfloor preparation. Their enthusiasm made the 48-hour drying wait fly by!
When we finally packed up our tools and cleared the site, the transformation was undeniable. The Arabian Pearl finish caught the light beautifully, making the bathrooms feel larger, cleaner, and undeniably modern. Seeing the customer’s face light up at the finished result is exactly why we do what we do.
The site was left spotless, the floors were gleaming, and another Brockley home now boasts a floor that will look incredible for decades to come. So, now you know where to come if you need lino fitting in Brockley SE4
