Transforming a London Bathroom with Retro Black & White Checkered Vinyl Flooring

One of our recent installations involved fitting a black and white retro checkered vinyl floor—often referred to as cushion vinyl or domestic vinyl—into a stylish bathroom in London. Preparation: The Key to a Perfect Finish

Fitting vinyl flooring may seem straightforward, but for a flawless result, proper subfloor preparation is absolutely crucial. As with any vinyl installation, the key to achieving a sleek, smooth finish is ensuring that the subfloor is completely flat, level, and free of imperfections. Any unevenness beneath the vinyl would be visible once installed, detracting from the crisp, clean lines of the checkered pattern.

Step 1: Assessing the Subfloor
When we arrived, we found that the existing subfloor had minor dips, raised edges, and old adhesive residues from the previous flooring. If left untreated, these imperfections would cause noticeable bumps and inconsistencies in the vinyl.

Step 2: Preparing the Surface
To create the ideal foundation for the vinyl, we carefully:

• Removed any debris and old adhesive residues to ensure a clean surface.
• Filled in any low spots using a high-quality latex screed, creating a smooth and even base.
• Sanded down any raised areas to prevent unevenness from showing through the vinyl.
• Allowed the screed to dry completely, ensuring the surface was stable and ready for installation.

Installation of the Retro Checkered Vinyl

Once the subfloor was properly prepped, we moved on to the installation process. Checkered vinyl flooring requires precise alignment to ensure the pattern remains visually perfect throughout the room.

Step 1: Measuring and Cutting
We carefully measured the space and cut the vinyl to size, making precise adjustments to accommodate bathroom fixtures such as the toilet and sink pedestal. Ensuring an exact fit was key to maintaining the symmetry of the checkered design.

Step 2: Laying the Vinyl
Using a premium-grade adhesive designed for wet environments, we meticulously laid the vinyl, carefully aligning each black and white square for a seamless visual effect. We worked methodically to eliminate air bubbles and ripples, ensuring the flooring was firmly bonded to the prepared subfloor.

Step 3: Finishing Touches
To complete the installation, we sealed the edges with a waterproof sealant, protecting against moisture ingress and ensuring the longevity of the flooring. We then gave the surface a final clean and polish, enhancing the sharp contrast of the black and white checkered pattern.

A Stunning Vintage Bathroom Transformation

The end result was a stunning, retro-inspired bathroom floor that perfectly complemented the homeowner’s vision. With its durable, water-resistant properties and timeless aesthetic, the black and white checkered vinyl flooring proved to be the perfect choice and a lot cheaper than say a Forbo Marmoleum Real Marbled Blue 3030.
