Specialist Rug Installation with Hand-Sewn Floor Box Access in Central London
Some flooring projects require more than standard installation skills—they demand genuine craftsmanship, patience, and expertise that simply cannot be taught overnight. This week, we had the pleasure of completing one of our most intricate projects to date: installing a collection of exceptionally valuable rugs in a Central London office space, whilst ensuring full access to no fewer than fourteen floor boxes for power and data connections.
The Challenge: Luxury Rugs Meet Modern Office Infrastructure
Our client in the Cut, Central London, had invested in some truly stunning and very expensive rugs that he wanted professionally fitted in his workspace. However, there was a significant complication—the floor contained fourteen floor traps providing essential access to power outlets and internet connections. In a modern office environment, these floor boxes are absolutely crucial for day-to-day operations, and covering them permanently simply wasn’t an option.
The client had contacted numerous companies across London seeking a solution, but found that very few—if any—could offer the specialised skills required for this type of work. That’s when he discovered Cavendish deVere and our onsite hand sewing service for rugs, which proved to be exactly what he needed.
Why This Type of Work Is So Rare
The truth is, traditional hand-sewing skills in the flooring industry have become increasingly scarce. As more companies focus on quick, machine-based solutions, the artisanal techniques required for delicate work like this have fallen by the wayside. We may well be one of the only companies left in London that can perform this calibre of onsite needlework—which is precisely why we’ve been trusted by many of the capital’s major department stores and retail concessions over the years.
When you’re dealing with rugs worth thousands of pounds, you cannot afford to have someone inexperienced cutting holes and hoping for the best. Each cut must be precise, and the finishing work must be executed with the kind of attention to detail that protects the rug’s integrity and value.
Our Step-by-Step Approach
For this particular project, we followed a carefully planned process to ensure a flawless result:
Positioning and Preparation
First, we arrived on site and carefully manoeuvred the client’s rugs into their designated positions. Working with high-value textiles requires patience and care—rushing at this stage could result in damage or misalignment that would be difficult to correct later.
Precision Cutting
Once the rugs were in place, our team precisely cut fourteen holes to expose the floor boxes beneath. This is where experience truly matters. Each cut must align perfectly with the floor box below, with appropriate allowances for the finishing work to follow. Cut too small, and the floor box won’t be accessible; cut too large, and you’ve potentially ruined an expensive rug.
Expert Blind Stitching
With the holes cut, our skilled seamstress attended the site to perform the most delicate part of the operation: blind stitching all fourteen openings. This technique creates neat, finished edges around each floor box aperture whilst remaining virtually invisible from above. The stitching prevents fraying, reinforces the cut edges, and ensures the rug will maintain its appearance for years to come.
This is the same technique we often employ when working with rug border tapes and other finishing materials—it’s all about creating clean, professional edges that stand the test of time.
Final Positioning and Completion
After the stitching was complete, we repositioned the rugs perfectly in place, ensuring everything lay flat and the floor boxes remained fully accessible. Finally, we thoroughly cleaned the area and cleared away all debris, leaving the client’s space looking immaculate.
The Result: Form Meets Function
The finished installation looks absolutely stunning. The client now enjoys beautiful, high-end rugs throughout his workspace, whilst retaining complete access to all power and data connections whenever needed. The hinged floor box covers lift effortlessly through the hand-stitched openings, and when closed, the rugs lie perfectly flat with no visible compromise to their appearance.
Preserving Traditional Skills in Modern London
Projects like this remind us why preserving traditional craftsmanship matters. In an age of mass production and quick fixes, there’s still enormous value in knowing how to work with textiles properly. Our seamstresses carry skills that have been honed over decades, and we’re proud to offer services that most other flooring companies simply cannot provide.
Whether you need rug installation with complex cutouts, carpet edging and binding, or any other specialised textile work, Cavendish deVere has the expertise to deliver results that match the value of your investment. If you’ve been told something can’t be done, give us a call—we rather enjoy proving otherwise.
