Barbican Marmoleum Installation – Forbo Marmoleum Walton 3378 Stucco

We recently completed another Marmoleum installation at the Barbican, fitting Forbo Marmoleum Walton 3378 “Stucco” across the kitchen/lounge, bedroom, and hall areas. This particular colour is a smart, contemporary neutral with a subtle natural texture, making it ideal for modern interiors and high-traffic living spaces. Walton is known for its clean, minimal look and soft surface expression, and in the Stucco shade it works especially well with the Barbican’s architectural character.

As with most Barbican projects, the key to a great result is preparation, planning, and experience. We’ve fitted a large number of linoleum floors in the Barbican over the years and we now know the building extremely well—access routes, loading rules, work permits, and the practical realities of working within a busy residential complex. It’s a location that can be tricky for installers who aren’t familiar with it, but it’s exactly the kind of environment we’re set up for.

Areas fitted

  • Kitchen / Lounge

  • Bedroom

  • Hall / circulation areas

Description of works (method and process)

1) Removal of existing flooring
We began by carefully uplifting the existing floor finishes across all areas. Where required, we removed residues and old adhesives to ensure the subfloor could be properly prepared for new installation. All waste material was bagged, taken away, and disposed of responsibly, leaving the property clear and ready for the next stage.

2) Subfloor priming
Once the substrate was exposed and cleaned, we applied a suitable primer to the kitchen/lounge, bedroom, and hallway areas. Priming is a crucial step in achieving a strong bond and consistent curing of subsequent smoothing compounds, especially where subfloors vary between rooms or show signs of previous coatings.

3) Screeding and drying time
After priming, we applied a screed to address level variations and create a stable base for the Marmoleum. The screed was then left to dry for 24–48 hours (depending on site conditions and moisture levels). Proper drying time is essential—rushing this stage can lead to moisture-related issues and can compromise the final finish.

4) Feather finish, sanding, and final surface prep
Following the screed cure, we applied a feather finish where needed to remove any minor imperfections and create a smooth, flat surface. Once fully set, the surface was sanded to eliminate high spots and achieve a clean, uniform base. Marmoleum is a high-quality natural product and it will show subfloor defects if preparation isn’t done correctly—this is where professional standards really matter.

5) Templating, cutting, and fitting
In areas with more complex geometry—typical of Barbican properties—we templated where required to ensure accuracy around edges, thresholds, and any awkward returns. The Marmoleum Walton 3378 Stucco is supplied in rolls (commonly up to 2m wide) at a standard thickness of 2.5mm, and it needs precise handling to keep lines clean and the finish consistent across room transitions.

6) Adhesive application and installation
We installed the Marmoleum using the correct adhesive system for the product and substrate, applying it evenly and laying the material carefully to avoid trapping air or creating tension. Once placed, the flooring was pressed and rolled thoroughly to secure full contact and ensure a long-lasting bond. Seams and joins (where applicable) were aligned cleanly to maintain a consistent visual flow between spaces.

Working in the Barbican: why experience matters

The Barbican presents unique challenges. One of the biggest considerations is the communal heating system, which can affect floor temperature and site working conditions—particularly relevant when you’re installing resilient sheet flooring and working with adhesives and smoothing compounds. On top of that, there are often strict work restrictions around deliveries, noise, access times, and waste removal.

Because we’ve completed so many linoleum installations in the Barbican, we’re used to navigating these constraints efficiently and respectfully. It saves time, reduces disruption, and helps ensure the job runs smoothly from start to finish. If you want a Marmoleum (or any linoleum) floor in the Barbican, we’re the team to call—this is our patch, and we know how to get it done properly.

7) Clean down and handover
After installation, we cleaned the flooring and cleared the site completely, removing all debris and leaving the property tidy and ready to use.

So, you know where to come if you need a professional linoleum fitter in the Barbican
