A Bespoke Staircase Transformation in Richmond: Fitting Crucial Trading’s Wool Audrey Midday WFS3
In December, on one of those cold, wet and windswept London days, we travelled to Richmond upon Thames to complete what turned out to be one of the most technically intricate and visually rewarding installations of the year. The clients—a genuinely lovely couple with a beautifully refurbished home—had chosen an exceptional carpet: Crucial Trading’s Wool Audrey Midday WFS3. This is a premium, high-end wool carpet with a bold, multi-tonal stripe pattern. Stunning to look at, but famously unforgiving when it comes to fitting—especially on a winding staircase.
Striped carpets demand meticulous planning, and this job required even more precision than usual. On a straight run of stairs, the stripes must sit perfectly centred and consistent step to step. But on winders—those angled treads that twist around a curve—the challenge intensifies dramatically. Each tread narrows on one side and widens on the other, which means the stripes naturally want to skew. If you simply lay the carpet by following the shape of the stairs, the pattern will distort, and the result will look chaotic.
To avoid this, we spent considerable time on preparation. Before trimming a single piece, we laid the carpet out fully to assess the direction of the stripe, then planned each winder individually. Every cut had to be made with the pattern in mind—not the shape of the stair. By manipulating the carpet and adjusting the angles of the templates, we were able to keep the stripes flowing cleanly from step to step, maintaining their alignment even as the staircase twisted. It’s the sort of work that can’t be rushed; it requires experience, accuracy, and a good eye for both geometry and aesthetics.
The result was truly worth it. The striking pattern of the Wool Audrey Midday WFS3 wrapped beautifully around the staircase, transforming what could have been a difficult architectural feature into a showpiece. When the clients saw it, they were ecstatic—exactly the response we always strive for, and especially gratifying given the complexity of the project.
The landing, however, presented an unexpected twist. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough carpet left to run the stripes in the correct direction. Ideally, striped carpets should never be fitted crossways, as it interrupts the flow and can look visually jarring. But the clients were insistent, fully aware of the compromise but determined to have the landing completed that same day. Wanting to keep them happy—and knowing how much the rest of the installation meant to them—we agreed. Even with the stripes running the “wrong” way, we finished it as cleanly and neatly as possible, ensuring the transitions and edging were perfect.
Despite the weather trying its best to dampen the day, the job itself turned into something special. The staircase now stands as a testament to craftsmanship, planning, and the beauty of a high-quality carpet fitted with care. Jobs like this—technically demanding, visually striking, and appreciated by great clients—are exactly why we love what we do. and we are always happy to fit exciting stair carpets in Richmond-upon-Thames!
