It was a Tuesday afternoon when the phone rang with what can only be described as a flooring emergency. On the other end was a rather frantic gentleman with a problem that would make most installers wince: he was getting married on Saturday, the wedding reception was being held at his home, and he had no floor to speak of. The kitchen and several other rooms were in a state of disarray, with Marmoleum material sitting ready but absolutely no one to fit it.<\/p>\n

His builder, to his credit, had wisely recognised that fitting linoleum and Marmoleum requires specialist skills that general tradespeople simply don’t possess. This left our soon-to-be-married client desperately searching for a professional who could not only do the job properly but could do it in an impossibly tight timeframe.<\/p>\n

The Dying Art of Marmoleum Installation<\/h2>\n

Here’s the thing that many people don’t realise: there are very<\/em> few skilled Marmoleum and linoleum fitters left in the trade. It’s become something of a dying art. Unlike vinyl or laminate flooring, which can be tackled with reasonable success by competent DIYers or general builders, Marmoleum demands specific expertise, proper tools, and years of experience to achieve a flawless finish.<\/p>\n

The material itself\u2014whether you’re working with Forbo Marmleum Walton<\/a> or other varieties from the range\u2014is wonderfully sustainable and durable, but it’s also unforgiving when it comes to installation. Get it wrong, and you’ll have bubbles, lifting edges, and seams that announce themselves from across the room. Get it right, and you have a floor that will last decades.<\/p>\n

Our client was genuinely lucky to find us. The Scale of the Challenge<\/h2>\n

This wasn’t a simple kitchen floor replacement. The scope of works covered multiple areas throughout the property:<\/p>\n

    The Installation Process: Doing It Properly Under Pressure<\/h2>\n

    Despite the time constraints, we refused to cut corners. Here’s what the project entailed:<\/p>\n

    Day One: Preparation and Priming<\/h3>\n

    First, we removed the existing carpet and wood block flooring from all areas. This material was taken away and disposed of responsibly. With the subfloor exposed, we could assess its condition and begin the crucial preparation work.<\/p>\n

    A specialist primer was applied across the lounge, hallway, master bedroom, and spare bedroom. This step is essential for ensuring proper adhesion of the subsequent layers and preventing moisture-related issues down the line.<\/p>\n

    Days Two and Three: Screeding and Smoothing<\/h3>\n

    Self-levelling screed was applied to all areas and allowed to cure. This typically requires 24 to 48 hours, which was cutting things incredibly fine given our Saturday deadline. The screed creates a level, stable base that’s absolutely critical for Marmoleum\u2014any imperfections in the subfloor will telegraph through to the finished surface.<\/p>\n

    Once the screed had cured sufficiently, we applied a feather finish and sanded the entire surface to create a perfectly smooth, flat foundation. This stage requires a trained eye and considerable patience; rushing it would compromise everything that follows.<\/p>\n

    Final Day: The Main Event<\/h3>\n

    With the subfloor preparation complete, we moved to the installation itself. Templates were created where required\u2014particularly important in areas with complex layouts or obstacles\u2014and the Marmoleum was precisely cut and fitted. Using professional-grade adhesive, each piece was carefully bonded to the subfloor, ensuring complete contact and eliminating any risk of bubbles or lifting.<\/p>\n

    The site was thoroughly cleaned and cleared upon completion, leaving our client with beautiful, wedding-ready floors.<\/p>\n

    Fair Pricing, Even in Emergencies<\/h2>\n

    We’d be lying if we said we weren’t aware of our client’s predicament. He couldn’t get anyone else. He was desperate. The wedding was in days. Some businesses might see that as an opportunity to inflate their prices considerably.<\/p>\n

    That’s not how we operate. Despite the urgency, despite the schedule shuffling required, and despite knowing full well that we had significant leverage, we quoted a standard, fair price for the work. It’s simply not in our nature to take advantage of people when they’re in a difficult situation.<\/p>\n

    A Reflection on Reviews (Or the Lack Thereof)<\/h2>\n

    The gentleman was absolutely delighted with the result. His floors were finished in time, his wedding went ahead without a hitch, and he was effusive in his thanks. A lovely chap, by all accounts.<\/p>\n

    Did we get a review? We did not. Despite two polite prompts and despite having genuinely saved his wedding reception, we never received that Google review.<\/p>\n

    This brings us to something worth mentioning to anyone reading reviews for any trade. We have over 160 reviews on Google, which sounds impressive until you consider we’ve completed somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 projects. That’s a review rate of roughly 5-8%.<\/p>\n

    The reality is that satisfied customers\u2014even extremely<\/em> satisfied customers\u2014often simply don’t get around to leaving reviews. Life gets busy. They mean to do it but forget. It takes only a minute, but that minute never quite materialises.<\/p>\n

    Meanwhile, dissatisfied customers? They’ll leave that one-star review within hours, sometimes even if they haven’t actually used the service. It’s human nature, unfortunately.<\/p>\n

    So when you see our reviews\u2014or any tradesperson’s reviews\u2014bear in mind that they represent a small fraction of the work actually completed. Those five-star ratings came from customers who took that extra moment to acknowledge good work. The silent majority, like our wedding client, are out there enjoying their beautiful floors without ever recording their satisfaction publicly.<\/p>\n

    When You Need Flooring in a Hurry<\/h2>\n

    While we certainly don’t recommend leaving your flooring to the last minute before a major life event, emergencies do happen.
