Every so often, we receive a call that reminds us precisely why specialist flooring expertise matters. This particular project in Notting Hill, London, came to us as a rescue mission \u2013 a homeowner at their wit’s end after a builder had made an absolute hash of their stair runner installation. What we found upon arrival was, quite frankly, a masterclass in how not<\/em> to fit flooring.<\/p>\n

The Problem: A Builder Out of His Depth<\/h2>\n

The client had originally commissioned their builder to supply and fit a stair runner as part of a wider renovation project. It seemed convenient at the time \u2013 the builder was already on site, and surely fitting a runner couldn’t be that difficult? Unfortunately, this assumption proved costly.<\/p>\n

When we arrived to assess the situation, the issues were immediately apparent. The runner itself was badly fitted, with uneven tension throughout and visible gaps where the carpet wasn’t properly secured to the treads. But the real eyesore was the whipping along the edges. For those unfamiliar with the term, whipping is the decorative binding that runs along the sides of a stair runner, providing both a finished aesthetic and preventing fraying. Done well, it’s barely noticeable \u2013 a subtle frame that enhances the overall look. Done poorly, as was the case here, it becomes the first thing you see, and not in a good way.<\/p>\n

The whipping on this runner was, to put it diplomatically, diabolical<\/em>. Uneven stitching, loose threads, and sections that were pulling away from the carpet entirely. The whole installation looked amateurish, completely out of place in what was otherwise a beautifully renovated Notting Hill home. The builder, bless him, was simply out of his depth \u2013 a competent tradesman in his own field, no doubt, but flooring installation requires specialist skills that take years to develop.<\/p>\n

Why Builders Shouldn’t Fit Flooring<\/h2>\n

This scenario is one we encounter more often than you might expect. Builders are brilliant at what they do \u2013 structural work, plastering, general construction \u2013 but flooring installation is a specialist trade. It requires specific knowledge of different materials, proper subfloor preparation, precise measuring and cutting techniques, and years of hands-on experience to achieve a professional finish.<\/p>\n

A herringbone stair runner with a brown whipped edge<\/a>, for example, demands meticulous attention to pattern alignment and expert binding work. These aren’t skills that can be picked up on a weekend course or learned from a YouTube tutorial. When you’re investing in quality flooring for your home, cutting corners on installation is a false economy that invariably leads to disappointment.<\/p>\n

What Went Wrong<\/h3>\n

In this particular case, the builder had made several fundamental errors:<\/p>\n
